Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at home on a whim on my couch. I am still learning and for this photo, I was simply playing around with various settings.

Time

I honestly can not remember. I believe this was taken in the morning as the sun was coming in perfectly on the right side of the bird. At the time, my bird was trying to look away from the camera as he does not like the noise of the focus motors. Somehow I still managed to get this shot.

Lighting

The only light source from this was natural sunlight coming into my bay windows. The light brought his colors out wonderfully and allowed me to get up close and personal.

Equipment

This was surprisingly shot with my super-zoom P900. I was in full manual mode and just before this messing around with the settings. No tripod was used and this was shot by hand.

Inspiration

Little Chicken, the bird pictured, is one of my best friends. I have had him since he was just hatched and I absolutely love getting pictures of him. At first this picture was just part of a bunch of quick shots while changing around settings and I was able to get this one.

Editing

No post processing was done to this. Looking back, I kind of wish I had upped the saturation on this a small amount to really bring out the colors in him.

In my camera bag

Being a relatively new self taught photographer, I currently carry around my Nikon D7500 and my Nikon P900. For the 7500, I always bring my 40mm F 2.8g AF-S and my 35mm f/1.8G AF-S. I also will occasionally bring a telephoto however it does not get much use so stays home more often than not.

Feedback

Find a pretty bird and just start shooting! Pictures like this can be taken in pet shops if needed. Just make sure you have a little bit of background blur/bokeh and you will be good to go. Also especially for new photographers, put your camera in full manual mode and just start taking pictures and changing settings. A lot of pictures are going to come out pretty bad but you will find the sweet spots. Eventually, this will come naturally and you will know what settings to start around.
