Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the Tracy Fjord in Alaska. Finished off the roll and reloaded it into the camera and shot a picture of Huntington Beach, California several years later.

Time

Morning, Summer

Lighting

All natural

Equipment

This was shot handheld using a Canon AE-1 with Portra film.

Inspiration

I like to take double exposures to attempt to create a false reality. I approach them in different ways, what makes this photo so great is the randomity of it all. In this case I didn't keep track of what was on the film nor did I shoot the pictures back to back so when everything aligned the way it did that's what made it so beautiful to me. Most the time I prefer to shoot my double exposures with my Hasselblad one frame directly after the other or with my Leica M5

Editing

Scans of 35mm film. Light contrast increase.

In my camera bag

Hasselblad 500cm, Leica M5, Polaroid Land Camera, Film Leader Retriever, Tripod

Feedback

Keep track of where the teeth and film lay while loading your camera if you plan on reloading the roll. The Leica M5 is the only Leica that can do double exposures one frame directly after another. I usually like to shoot a roll of textures then rewind and shoot your scenes. A film leader retriever can be handy. https://www.amazon.com/Leader-Retriever-PICKER-Cassettes-Extractor/dp/B00DN1080U
