Behind The Lens

Location

This was one of many pictures I took of the gorillas at the Dallas Zoo in June 2017.

Time

. With the enclosure glass somewhat clean and the noontime, ambient lighting was fairly strong enhanced my ability to get close-ups giving me very pleasing results as you can see.

Lighting

The strong noontime light shining down into their enclosed habit gave me a very workable light even in the shaded areas. I know most photographers shun noontime light, but in the right environment you can use the abundance of light to your advantage if you are skillful with your camera and observant

Equipment

I was still using a Nikon D-700 when I captured this shot...using a Nikon 70-200f 2.8 VR 2 at 1/80sec f.4

Inspiration

The gorilla group was very active that day and created many opportunities for good shots. What amazed me about these gorillas was their human like actions, emotions and expressions. I wanted the images I captured to give the viewer a genuine, soulful connection with these amazing animals. I was inspired by their playful actions and human like behavior

Editing

I always sharpen my images and make sure the color is balanced. This is the beauty of shooting all my images in RAW

In my camera bag

My day bag on this trip included my Nikon D-700 body, a 70-200 2.8 VR lens and a 24-70 2.8, both Nikon USA lenses

Feedback

Be observant, understand your lighting and the opportunities presented with each location
