Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during a family visit to our local Butterfly World while trying to pass some time in between family visits that day. It's a new attraction in the area, and while have visited another location - we wanted to check this one out. I happened to have my camera, so naturally, I started shooting away.

Time

This was shot mid-day in an enclosed area.

Lighting

The lighting was all natural light from inside the facility.

Equipment

I only used my Sony NEX5r with the kit 18mm-50mm lens on it - nothing else (no flash)

Inspiration

I loved the spots on this butterfly, it reminded me of an owl actually. I looked up this butterfly later on to research more and the spots mimic eyes of predators and help keep the butterfly safe from other prey.

Editing

Yes, I used Lightroom to pull up some of the details on the wings. Increased the black, pulled up the saturation on blue so you could see that thin blue line on the edge of the wings better. I also took the exposure up slightly, sharpened it slightly. That is pretty much it - the butterfly did the rest really!

In my camera bag

I upgraded recently to the Sony 6500, so I carry that along with a 50mm, the kit lens, 70-150mm zoom and a 16mm pancake lens. I don't usually carry my tripod, pretty bad at that actually although I know I should be in better habit. I have my cleaning equipment, 3 extra batteries that are fully charged, a remote and that is about it!

Feedback

Patience... Butterflies move a lot and it's tough to catch them still enough to get a photo like this. I took a lot of pictures that day and mostly just used the time as practice and not getting stressed out if the photos weren't perfect. I was happy with a lot of what I shot that day. Mostly, it was an enjoyable time and peaceful.
