This photo was taken while I was on holiday in Simons Town, South Africa with my Dad. We were staying in a B&B about 5 minutes from the town centre that rested on a hill overlooking False Bay. I cannot recommend this place enough - one for the bucket list for sure!Time
It was very early in the morning so it would have been around 5:30 so at the time I felt pretty tired having just arrived the day before but when I started to make up, the first thing I noticed was the sun popping through the blinds of my room so I picked up my camera, opened the door andLighting
I absolutely loved the lighting and this was exactly the kind of image I would expect to have seen on the plains of the Masai Mara let alone in South Africa. What was interesting from the shot was the kind of black curtain that looked as though it was coming down slowly from the top. It would have been nice to get the full shot filled with the beautiful orange, golden sky but I also guess it puts the sun more as the central focus of the shot. When I go on holiday to Spain in the South, this is the lighting I look for everyday!Equipment
I shot this on my first ever DSLR camera. It was a Panasonic Lumix FZ72 with a crazy zoom capability that I bought for around £280. When I got it out of the packaging I was super excited and spent ages zooming in and out trying to get the focus right - an amazing starter camera that I bought especially for the trip to South Africa but I have since upgraded to a Nikon which is still like a beginner camera but I love it!Inspiration
Sunrise and sunset shots are without a doubt my favourite shots to take. I love the really golden colours that come across combined with the vast expanse of water. For some reason that I cannot fully describe, been by the water is the thing that relaxes me the most. Perhaps it is the sound of the waves, birds chirping, feel of the cool water or the slightly terrifying and exciting idea of what is lurking beneath the surface which in the case of South Africa is extremely unpredictable!Editing
I did not spend a lot of time on this one because even now I am still trying to devote some time to post production. What I did was load the raw image onto my laptop and then transfer it onto my iPhone. Using the editing feature, I made some edits to the image itself to bring out the orange colours a bit more.In my camera bag
I am pretty basic at the moment as I am still trying to find my feet and develop my style. To answer the question I always have my iPhone 7 and my Nikon D3500 with an interchangeable lens. I am hoping to add a 8-16mm lens sometime in the next year and a half!Feedback
Wherever you go, check the weather for the day, next day and try to figure out where the sun pops up and then where it sets. If you are getting up in the morning though, try to set at least 6 alarms if you really are not a morning person but also remember why you are getting up and what you want because it really is worth it in the end! Also consider where you want to take the shot from. In this case I was high up enough from where I was staying to get a wide shot that did not have pretty much anything getting in the way of it so I could get in as much light as possible.
