Behind The Lens

Location

Taken in the Tropical House at Chester Zoo, Uk which is a free flight area for a range of tropical birds.

Time

Taken just after midday, however this is an indoor exhibit with low light levels at all times.

Lighting

Lighting is a mixture of sunlight through roof panels and some additional lighting inside the exhibit. Flashes are discouraged so this is just the light available, the leaves are the surrounding bushes gives a dappled and diffuse highlights.

Equipment

Sony SLT-A57 with Sony SAL70-300mm hand held.

Inspiration

Love watching the birds in this exhibit but it is very difficult to get good shots due to low light, and foliage. These birds can look very dull unless you get light on the feathers, i noticed that this one just caught the light as it was feeding just as it looked up from the bowl.

Editing

Cropped, some levels but not much else, its quite close to SOC.

In my camera bag

That's very dependant on what I am going to do, a walk out will just be a Panasonic GX7, with bodycap lens or a 25mm. More dedicated photography trips use a Sony A7 and Sony SLT-A57, with a variety of Primes and Zooms, some of which are vintage. Favourites being Minolta 50mm f3,5 macro and 58mm f1.4. For longer shots I use a Tokina 50-250 or Tamron 70-210 (vintage)

Feedback

Patience and position, initially I was a little bit to the side to try and get a clearer view, but the light didn't hit the feathers and the colours didn't show up as well.
