Location
This photo was take from a cruise ship departing the harbor at San Juan, Puerto Rico. 2 hours earlier, I had been exploring the fort.Time
We were supposed to depart at noon, but 2 passengers did not make it back to the ship. We waited until 12:45, and left them behind. The angle on the for seemed better than I was getting from the land. Storm clouds were starting to build, but we didn't get rain until very late.Lighting
Departure was to the north. In June, so the sun was still high, but from the left. Most of the sky was sunny.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon Rebel, using a Canon 75-300mm lens at 80mm. Exposure was f/3.5 1/2000 sec at iso 100, handheld at the rail.Inspiration
I had spent the morning exploring the fort, and saw it's relation to the city only as we left. Not sure when I would return, I took 6 shots. This was the best. At the left side, you can make out a walkway at the base of the wall. There are dozens of cats that live among the rocks, and fed by staff & locals. I was hopng to shot them, but this was taken in 2009 and did not have the resolution.Editing
Post processing included cropping and reduced highlights to enhance the sky.In my camera bag
Today, I carry a Canon 70D and a T3i. Lenses include a Canon 70-300mm USM, 28-105 USM IS, an 18-135mm IS. 11-16mm, and a Tokina 11-16mm wide angle. I carry a Canon 430 flash, & Kenko teleconverters. Depending on the shoot, I also have a Tamron 200-500mm f/5.6-6.3 and a Canon 100mm macro 2..8L IS USMFeedback
Be aware of your surroundings. Most of this trip was dedicated to details, but I also wanted a broad landscape photo. Anytime you find yourself in awe of your surroundings, take several photos. Take more photos than you think you need. Carry more batteries & SD cards than you think you need. Then frame the photo in the camera. You can't fix things you don't have. Have patience. Don't just take "a" photo and walk away. However, especially on vacation, don't get so involved in the picture that you forget to look around and make memories.
