Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Dominica. This is an area where the movie with Johnnie Depp was filmed - I can't remember the name of the film, but he is a pirate!

Time

The picture was taken mid afternoon. We were on a small boat that was taking us inland.

Lighting

The lighting is natural. There was no flash used.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon 3000. I have since graduated to a full-body Nikon - but the pictures taken with the 3000 have been nice.

Inspiration

Whenever I am somewhere new or see something that stikes me as unusual, I have to take the picture. This tropical river and the gorgeous, lush bushes were inspiring.

Editing

The only post-processing used was done in Photoshop. I believe I sharpened the images - although only slightly and it really didn't need it. I have a husband who is always telling me my pictures aren't sharp enough so it has become a habit to use that one feature.

In my camera bag

I have my camera, three lens - a 12-24 mm, a 28-300 mm lens, and a 18-58 mm lens. I have a monopod that easily slides into a pocket on my shoulder bag. That is about all I carry.

Feedback

The most important thing to do is to recognize the light and shadows in your surroundings. With practice you can tell if the photo is going to be flat in color and dimension because the light does not give the richness of color. In shadows you can often times find richer tones, especially if there is natural light filtering in. The best times of the day to shoot is between 7 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. or between 5:30 and dusk. That does not exclude the noon hour, but it's best to just be aware of how vivid the colors are.
