Behind The Lens

Location

Arusha region near Lake Manyara, Tanzania, Africa

Time

We had left the Ngorongoro Crater and had driven down the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. Whilst I am primarily a Wildlife Photographer but I don't waste an opportunity when it presents its self! Taken after a long day at 4:20 pm.

Lighting

The sun was getting lower in the sky with the sides of the rider either strongly lit or in deep shadow. I think the light gives the image greater depth and adds character to the rider.

Equipment

I was using two Canon 7D's on the day one with 24-105 and one with 100-400. This shot was taken with the 100-400. Our car was moving quickly so I risked missing the opportunity as the distance to the cyclist expanded.

Inspiration

I think the image illustrates the hard work required by villagers to survive in Africa. It also shows how a bicycle can transform their lives.

Editing

Post processed in Lightroom with additional sharpening and noise reduction in Photoshop. 1/3rd crop. Whites +11 Blacks -5 Shadows +51 Clarity +24 Vibrance +13 Sharpening 34 Masking 81 Noise reduction - Luminance 63 Detail 9 Contrast 17

In my camera bag

I am a Wildlife Artist and Photographer I chose the 7D for the extra magnification on the crop sensor. My carry on camera bag for travels weighs 14kg. It contains all my essential Camera gear including laptop, card reader, chargers, hard drives, cables, shoulder stock .... I am now shooting with a Canon 7D and 7D Mark11, 100-400 1:4.5-5.6 L IS 11 USM. & 24-105 1:4. There is marked improvement in image quality from the 7D and the earlier 100-400. The vast majority of my shots are taken with the 100-400.

Feedback

Whilst focusing on a particular area of photography don't waste opportunities that occur along the way!
