Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in St. Andrews in Scotland. This gate is part of the main road around the city, just outside the destroyed cathedral.

Time

This was taken early afternoon on a cloudy day.

Lighting

It’s all ambient lighting. This was actually shot in color, then I adjusted it to black and white.

Equipment

I’m an amateur photographer with an iPhone! I shot this one with my 5C.

Inspiration

I just loved the gateway! It’s still in use as you can see from the painted lines. I actually had to wait on the side walk for a break in traffic to get this angle.

Editing

I didn’t have to do much at all for post processing. I actually favor black and white over color, so I changed it in the photo app. Oddly enough, the day itself was so grey and the stone was so dark that it didn’t require me to adjust the saturation or contrast.

In my camera bag

My phone. That’s all the equipment I have. I did take photography classes with a completely manual Pentax K1000, so adjusting for natural lighting is second nature to me.

Feedback

Go with your gut. I love digital photography because of the leeway it gives to take multiple photos of the same subject rapidly, and it allows you to play with the composition as much as you like!
