Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in my previous roommates backyard, when I was feeling more than less creative. I decided to try out my new lens, and these shots happened.

Time

I want to say it was around 3-4pm in the summer, there was a golden glow but just enough shade underneath the tree to get a perfect contrast

Lighting

All natural light, just using my eye to see where the light hit my skin best, where the shadow was and how much I liked the angle, positioning and contrast.

Equipment

I was using a Canon t3i, a tripod and a portrait lens, no flash, and a self timer. Continuing to pose in different ways until I got the exact shot I wanted

Inspiration

Sometimes when I’m feeling less creative, I would like to just go outside and play around, get my creative juices flowing and my brain working to see what kind of art I could create this day. This was in the beginning of my now, 8 year relationship and this was the way he made me feel. Safe, warm, accepted, heard, when usually I wouldn’t be heard or seen or even acknowledged by anyone. He listened to me, held my hand, and made me feel like I was at home. He is my home.

Editing

This was before I knew about editing and post-processing, honestly these shots I got this day were truly spontaneous and I had no idea they would turn out like this.

In my camera bag

I always keep my 85mm main lens on me, since this was before I started to play with the idea of exterior flash, I focused on getting creative with my light, shadows, and the contrast between my face, the tree and the suns shadows. I didn’t have many lenses during this time, but I used them as much as I could.

Feedback

Be creative, be spontaneous, understand that not every shot will be perfect and you may have to take 20-40 shots to get the right one you want. Play around with where you’re standing, is it shady, is it sunny, is it just the right amount of contrast to your skin, does it look to blown out and over exposed, trying different angles, positions, distances from where you stand and strike a pose, and eventually you will conjure up one of those shots that make you say, “wow, I made this.”
