Salisbury Cathedral was built during the 12th and 13th centuries AD at its current location in the centre of Salisbury, UK. An earlier cathedral existed at Old Sarum castle a few miles away. The cathedral spire is the tallest spire in Europe but was an addition to the original plan in the 13th century. Today it looks as if it is sloping to one side, which it is. This is because the tower it was placed on was not constructed to carry the weight of the spire.
