Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Lulworth Cove, Dorset, GB. Nature, landscapes and seascapes are my passion so this was a perfect setting for me.

Time

Lulworth Cove is a horseshoe shaped cove with one entrance in and out, a very popular area for visitors to the Dorset coast. The water inside is naturally calm but the state of the sea beyond always depends on the weather. This photograph was taken quite late in the afternoon on a windy winter morning. There were plenty of white tip waves out to sea. I noticed the waves crashing against the natural breakwater to the right of the entrance to the cove. The spray intrigued me and I hadn't had much opportunity to capture sea spray before. That's why I took this photograph.

Lighting

At the time I took this photograph the sun was starting to set to the right of the image. I wanted to capture the sunlight reflecting off the spray as it rose. Very natural light but a bit hard.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 750D with a Tamron 70-300 mm lens. Hand held and the lens was about 270mm when the photo was taken.

Inspiration

I love photographing any kind of water but what intrigued me most about this was the way the waves crashed against the rocky outcrop. I could see waves rushing in beyond it and this rocky area acted as a natural breakwater, stopping the waves in their tracks. The action of the waves as they hit the rock gave me the opportunity to practice my action photography. Capturing a sharp image of the action of the spray was my main desire in taking this photo.

Editing

Very basic in Photoshop. At that time I was still learning to use it so was limited as to what I could do. If I processed the photo again now it would be quite different.

In my camera bag

At that time I had my Canon 750D with a Tamron 70-300mm lens, a Canon 50mm lens and a few filters. Now I carry a Canon 5D MkIII, the Tamron lens, Canon 50mm lens, a Canon 24-105mm lens, a 2x teleconverter, several filters and a travel tripod.

Feedback

This area of the Dorset coastline is great for nature lovers or photographers of seascapes. Although Lulworth Cove is at sea level, there are many other sites; beaches, cliffs, harbours which are great for photographers. I was quite lucky on the day I took this image because although it was sunny it was also very windy. There are many better opportunities to photo the sea in this area an stormy days. If I'd had time I could have walked around the cove to the left and captured this image with the setting sun behind the rocks. Using a steady hand, fast speed setting, low ISO and high F stop are the key to capturing this kind of action.
