Catherine Hill Bay was a pioneer mining settlement with a ship coal loading facility taking coal from a local mine round to Newcastle NSWS. The loading facility has now been made redundant and only a beach and some old houses remain. The area is currently undergoing a development into prime surf side housing around the point which can be seen from the beach.
