Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the small country village of Duckenfield near Morpeth in the Hunter Valley, NSW, Australia

Time

We were on a family drive from the historic village of Morpeth through the countryside after a light lunch and decided to have a closer look at some adjoining small villages when we saw this old country barn on the roadside. I asked my son to quickly get out of the car and take a few shots as the road was very narrow and only really one car width. We were also conscious that people often speed in this quiet area so we couldn't hang around in case other vehicles were on the road around the bends heading in our direction.

Lighting

It had been a rainy day with small breaks in the clouds of light sunshine and just prior to taking this picture there had been a large cloudburst.

Equipment

On this occasion we only had our Samsung mobiles and I phones with us so no fancy setups were used.

Inspiration

The barn looked quite quaint as we passed so we turned and drove past a few times as the light was changing to see if it was worth photographing. We are all very pleased with the result.

Editing

Using Paintshop Pro 9, I altered the photo from full colour to a black and white rendition and was pleased with the result as it accentuated the character of the old building and its stonework

In my camera bag

I usually carry an Olympus 10/2 and or a Panasonic GX1 plus an assortment of lenses, gorilla tripod and filters but on this occasion my Samsung S4 mobile, my sons Oppo FS and my daughters I Phone 5 were all we had so they all did the job satisfactorily..

Feedback

The best camera is the one you have on you be it a phone or a high end camera. It pays to slow down and enjoy the scenery as you often notice things on the day that you may inadvertently have passed before when in a hurry. Take time to smell the roses and you just don't know what you will come across. This barn was one of those unusual things hidden away on the side of an old bush lined road in the rain and mist. The rain cleared and we happened across the subject..
