During World War II, the US Army Air Corps placed a heavy burden on these aircraft and their crews. They flew and fought the enemy primarily in the European Theater of Operations (ETO). The aircraft was designed to fly at a maximum altitude of 18,000 feet. However, it was common for them to fly up to 30,000+ feet. Many were lost during combat operations, until new long-range fighters were available to escort and protect them.
