Location
This photograph was taken in North Wales, in a place called Llarnarmon-Yn-Lal. It was part of a 2 dog photo shoot.Time
It was taken on a Sunday morning, the weather wasn't great, it had been raining all morning and we decided to wait to see if there was a break in the weather, lady luck was definitely on my side as the rain stopped for 30 minutes or so, enough time to get down and roll around with this little ball of energy.Lighting
Natural light using a silver deflector, I did have lighting with me if needed but I prefer to use natural light when working outdoors and especially with dogs as some can get a little spooked when lights are pointed at them.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100 with Sigma 17-50 f2.8 lens. Handheld, I had no chance of using a tripod with this bundle of fun, constantly moving, chasing the perfect shot. Exif data - ISO200, exp 1/1600, f2.8 at 50mm focal length.Inspiration
Just look at him, that's all the inspiration I needed. He is just so cute and his facial expressions were just amazing! He jumped onto a rattan style chair and just sat there looking at me, it was as if he was saying " go on then, here's your chance! take it now!". I used f2.8 and single point focussing as I wanted his face to pop, nicely softening and gently blurring the rest of him.Editing
The image was shot in RAW format and processed in Lightroom. Minimal tweaking, converting to black & white. In my camera bag
My go to camera and lens is my Nikon D7100 and Sigma 17-50 f2.8 lens, such a versatile combination, fast focussing and not too bulky. I always carry a couple of prime lenses with me, a 35mm and 105mm along with a spare body or 2.Feedback
My advice? For images like this? Be patient! It will happen at some point. I rolled around on the floor with jake, taking photos as we played, he soon got used to me being there and what was in my hand. If I had tried to force this pose it would not have happened.
