Behind The Lens

Location

Originally this was supposed to be one of those classic, nude milk bath shoots with flowers etc, I changed all that and this photo was taken in my bike workshop. We had to move a bunch of stripped motor bikes and tools around to make space for the tin bath, model and lights

Time

Mid Morning

Lighting

The lighting was quite difficult as the room itself has bright florescent strip lighting which does not have the mood I wanted. My Elinchrom Ranger flash heads where to bright and killed the mood, So I ended up using an LED continuous light source which gave me that stunning hazy light that I was looking for

Equipment

This was shot on my Canon EOS 5D MK III. I used my Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens For lighting I used a LED continuous light source

Inspiration

I was asked by the model to do a milk bath shoot. I did not want to go the same route as everyone else is doing with this kind of shoot, so I said yes, but only if we can shoot it with my twist. The end result was a fully clothed model inside an old tin bath full of water and bike cleaner. We had to be careful not to wet the very expensive boots she was wearing. For make up I smeared bike grease on her face. Not the milk bathe she was expecting, but the result was great. My model was an absolute star and did not complain about getting into an old rusty tin bath full of cold strange looking water.

Editing

Actually very little post processing was needed, I adjusted the colour balance slightly to make the tones a little warmer, Some dodge and burn in areas that needed, then just added a slight scratched border effect to complete the look.

In my camera bag

The most important thing in my bag - a bunch of bulldog clips - great for keeping wardrobe, backdrops in place - even holding lights and gels. Camera wise - 2 bodies - Canon 5D Mk II and %D Mk III. Lens wise I have a stunning Zeiss Jena 135mm, a Helios 50mm, (I like old wierd lenses) My trusty Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens; a Canon EF 200-400mm f/4 L IS USM, for Macro work I use a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM Macro Lens. For wide angle shots I have a Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD Lens. Other than that my bad contains batteries, an I Pad, For extra light I have an Elinchrom Ranger Quadra with 2 flash heads and a ring flash. An most importantly, there is usually an energy bar of some sort

Feedback

When shooting something like this you need to play around and keep playing until you get the light exactly how you want it. I had to drop my ISO to get the effect needed and had to use a light source that I had never tried before. The more you play the more you learn and the better your pics will be in the long run
