Location
This lovely blossom was taken at Longwood Gardens in their waterlily ponds at the consesrvatoryTime
This was taken around 3PM in the afternoon.Lighting
There was really harsh, strong sunlight so I decided to take advantage of the strong backlighting. I liked the way it was illuminating the petals and created a marvelous reflectionEquipment
This was taken with my old Canon 1Dx MK III, Canon 24/105 zoom on a tripod. I decided to do a three exposure HDR to get more tonal range in the dark and light values.Inspiration
I'd been wanting to take some nice waterlily/reflection photos and the ponds at Longwood are the perfect place to shoot. Lots of different colors and cultivars of hardy and tropical flowers and the ponds are maintained perfectly.Editing
Yes I merged three exposures in PhotoMatix for an HDR image to get better values in the darkest and lightest areas of the image. Then imported it to Lightroom for a final tweaking. I really liked the silky ripples in the water that the merged images gave me.In my camera bag
I just replaced my Canon 1Dx III with the Canon 5D IV, I also have a Canon 7D II for shooting birds. For lenses I have a Canon 24/105, 600 f/4 II and a 100/400 II. I'm still deciding on what I want to get for a wide angle. Also have flash, ring flash, lightweight tripod and monopods with ball heads, a heavyweight tripod with a Wimberly gimbal head and a selection of filters along with the usual camera paraphernalia.Feedback
For something like this where I've got time and the subject isn't going to fly away I spend some time viewing the flowers to see which ones are in the best light, and where I'm going to get the best reflections. I also brought along a small tripod stool so I could shoot from a lower angle. I set up and took images from several angles as well a bracketing shots to have the most material to choose from when processing the shots.
