Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken from a blind in Florida. Belted Kingfishers are very wary birds and difficult to approach. We were situated in a blind near this bird's favorite fishing perch well before sunrise and didn't leave the blinds until late morning after the bird left.

Time

This shot was taken in early morning shortly after sunrise

Lighting

The softer early morning light makes for a pleasing image. In this case we had a light overcast so there were no harsh shadows and overexposed highlights

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon 7DII with a Canon 600mm f/4 lens mounted on a tripod with a Wimberley gimbal head

Inspiration

I've always been fascinated with birds and have always wanted some Kingfisher shots in my portfolio. I met a terrific wildlife biologist who sets up the blinds to do Kingfisher shots. I actually had to wear waders and sit in water in a blind for hours to have this opportunity and it was well worth it. These birds are lightning fast and dive for prey and return to their perch in seconds. A really challenge to capture

Editing

Actually this photo has no post-processing except for adjusting the whites a bit and adding a trace of vibrance

In my camera bag

I use Canon equipment. For cameras I use their 7D II and 5D IV. I always have a 24/105 and my 100/400 f/4.5 - 5.6 in my camera bag. When doing bird photography I use a 600mm f/4, I also keep a 1.4 and 2x extenders in my kit. Heavyweight and lightweight gitzo tripods with gimbal and ball heads, an ND filter and cable release etc.

Feedback

If you want Kingfishers the best thing to do is to find their favorite fishing perches observe the times they normally feed and get set up in a blind early in the morning before the birds come in from their nighttime roosts. Then patience!
