These shoes belong to a gold miner and photographer called Joseph Divis. They remain how he left them at what was his house in Waiuta, a ghost town now, but once a booming gold mining town. Joseph had an accident in the mine and ended up badly injured. He modified these shoes himself to stop his toes from hurting. He died in 1967.
