Behind The Lens

Location

There is a log time county park just outside of where I live and on the backwaters of the Mississippi River called Goose Island. It is a very large area wooded and lots of water with all sorts of ducks, birds, deer, Herons and the like including turtles. There are also a few artesian wells in the park. One of those wells runs from a faucet on to a a small paved drainage run to the river. One morning I had a chance meeting with a turtle resting in the flowing water on that run. So naturally I saw an opportunity. I was able to get close enough to get this picture.

Time

While I will go through the park various times of day but this time it was in the mid morning.

Lighting

Since it was mid morning, fairly sunny, and he was facing toward the rising sun, I thought I would get too much light and wash him out. Fortunately there was enough tree shade at the time so too much light wasn't a big issue. I didn't have to do much touch-up of the light.

Equipment

I have a Nikon CoolPix B500. It isn't hugely versatile and only shoots in jpeg. Therfore, I pretty much get what I get with the settings it has to work with and then tweak as best I can in Photoshop.

Inspiration

I was just out looking for something I haven't gotten yet in nature pictures. I happened by this turtle as I was driving by where he was, hit the brake and gave it a shot.

Editing

I didn't have to do a lot. I cropped out the portion of his shell that was in the original. Once I open the picture I knew I wanted only his face in the finished photo.

In my camera bag

Because of the camera I have, extra equipment is not needed. So I just have a lens cloth and extra batteries.

Feedback

Just go out, keep your creative eyes open and your camera ready. You never know what you are going to come across and when that will hit you with inspiration even if you have been by or to the same place 100 times before looking.
