Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken when walking on Portobello beach just outside Edinburgh (yes, Edinburgh has a beach as well as a castle and an extinct volcano!).

Time

It was taken on a May evening, around 6 o’clock. It’s only a month from the Summer solstice so there were still several hours of daylight left.

Lighting

The clouds were looking quite moody and the monochrome really brings this out. The groins going out into the Forth always add a nice textural contrast to the sand and with the evening sun starting to lower, its light added lengthening shadows to add an extra dimension.

Equipment

This was shot on an iPhone 6 using the native filters on the phone, with a bit of post processing.

Inspiration

The beach is a short walk away and always interesting whether it be things washed up at the tideline of the people and dogs you see enjoying themselves there. On this day the weather and the light just made these groins stand out.

Editing

Yes. A little editing of the light and exposure in Adobe Photoshop Express to bring out the contrasts.

In my camera bag

As an amateur photographer my “proper camera” bag contains just a Sony SLT-A58 and a Sigma 300mm zoom lens in addition. It comes along for special holidays and musical rehearsals. The rest of the time it’s just my iPhone in my pocket!

Feedback

Again as an amateur, composition is my fiercest ally. I take the time to get the composition right, play with a few speed and exposure settings if using the DSLR, and otherwise rely on the camera to help me get good results! (One day I might actually take lessons.)
