I've been the official photographer for the annual Plano Senior High Auto Show since 2016 and this early model Chevrolet truck has been in attendance at the show for several years. As I recall, the truck's owner was pulling into the show area late and I happened to see him as he first pulled in. I was using a Canon 5D Mark II with a 18-40 Canon L series lens and waited for the driver to pull up close enough for a good shot. When this was taken, the truck was actually moving, although slowly and the photo was taken hand held. The sun had just moved behind clouds, so the conditions for a great photo were in place. In photoshop, I centered the subject truck slightly and burned in the edges for effect.Time
It was about 10:30am as I recall and the weather was partly cloudy. As the photo was taken, the sun was behind a fairly large bank of clouds, so the ambient light on the truck was even and not obstructed by shadows.Lighting
Natural light with sun just behind a good sized cloud and used a Canon Speedlite 580 EX camera mounted flash stepped down a third step for fill.Equipment
Hand held Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon L series 18-40mm lens. Made use of natural light, as I recall, I had stepped downInspiration
Was taking parked car photos as I observed the subject truck pull into the show area on the school's west side parking lot. I stepped to my left to position myself to get this photo as the truck drove by. Even with the truck moving, the ambient light was good enough to get the photo with a fast shutter speed to avoid motion blur and the photo turned out great.Editing
I used Adobe Photoshop CS6 to convert the image to black and white, center and to create the burned in edges. To me, this helps to direct the viewers focus and attention to the subject. In my camera bag
I will usually carry my Canon 5D, Canon 40D as a backup, 18-40 L series Canon lens, 70-200mm 2.8 Canon L series lens and my Canon Speedlite 580 flash to events like this. Usually, the cars aren't moving at car shows, so I have the opportunity to get close. The 18-40 lens allows me to crop in one car at a time, even though the cars are parked closely and I usually end up using it all day.Feedback
Always think like a photographer and be on the lookout for photographic opportunities and be thinking how you are going to get a image into the camera that you are viewing.
