This photo was taken in the woods near my house. The owl pair would frequent our back yard bird bath during the evenings.Time
If I remember correctly this shot was taken just before dusk in the middle of the summer. Here in Texas the summer evenings are long and the sun doesn't set until around 9pm.Lighting
This of course was all natural light. The sun had already begun to fall behind the trees but there was still enough light to capture them in all their beauty.Equipment
These two amazing birds were shot on my Nikon D750 at 200mm f2.8. The light was beginning to fade so I shot wide open to capture as much light as possible and to blur out the background creating a nice soft light and bokeh.Inspiration
The Texas Barred Owl is such a beautiful bird. The are so big and powerful,their talons and beaks are razor sharp. They are the ultimate predator of this area. This particular pair nests near the house and would visit our bird bath on a regular basis. Almost every evening we can hear them hooting in the distance.Editing
I am not a fan of lots of post processing, but I would be lying if I said I didn't add some. All I did was use Lightroom to tweak the image a little and make them pop out. These beautiful owls don't need much help.In my camera bag
My bag usually consists of my two Nikon D750's along with a 70-200mm f2.8, a 50mm f1.8 and usually my 16mm or 24-70 f2.8. It all depends on the shoot. I love shooting with the 50mm because it looks so natural the bokeh is amazing. I almost always carry some kind of ND filters or polarizers. And of course extra batteries.Feedback
Nature photography is sometimes difficult. You have to take what the scene gives you. If you are looking for something in particular, do your research. Know the area you are trying to shoot and know the subject. Be patient and you will be rewarded.
