Behind The Lens

Location

This image was shot in a public park in Malaysia. A tropical country.

Time

It was in the morning on a sunny day. I just walked around the park looking for some beyond the obvious type of subjects and found this palm leaves interesting.

Lighting

The beautiful backlighting was the key to create a silhouette to bring out the interesting designs of this palm leaves.

Equipment

I used a Nikon camera and lens for this shot on available light. No tripod or fill-in flash whatsoever.

Inspiration

I worked as a graphic designer prior to my retirement and love photographing graphic images with those elements of design such as colours, shapes, textures, forms and patterns. This image portrays the shadows of two palm leaves cast on another one. Forming interesting abstract silhouette patterns on the monochromic colour leaf.

Editing

I shot this image in RAW and did some post-processing to bring out the tones, contrast and colours.

In my camera bag

I use Nikon system. During photo outing, I bring two camera bodies, DX and FX. DX is for the telephoto lens and FX for the wide-angle lens. I bring three lenses. 16-35mm, 24-70mm and 80-400mm. Several camera batteries and lots of Sand Disk memory cards kept in a waist pouch. A Manfrotto tripod. I seldom use flash. I shoot RAW.

Feedback

Have a keen eye for details. See beyond the ordinary and visualisation on-site helps to form a mental image before the shoot. Be yourself, shoot what you want and not what other people want to see.
