Behind The Lens

Location

I live in Geraldton, on the coast of Western Australia. The Indian ocean is down the road 5mins walk away. This photo was taken near the mouth of the Chapman river which at times of heavy rain fall up stream breaks its banks and flows in to the ocean. This sunny day the river was still, which itself was a bonus as Geraldton is a windy place and while we do get still days getting a still river at the right time for the period when the pelican is sunning himself was a double bonus. You can tell when the river is high because the submerged tree branch that the Pelican is standing on is no longer visible. That is rare. This day I saw this picture from the road and walked down to the river to get close enough to take this great photo.

Time

Judging by the raw file, I saw this on one of my afternoon walks and went back home to get my camera as I only usually carry my digital compact when I go walking

Lighting

It was outdoors and a clear sunny afternoon it was very directional.

Equipment

Shot on my Canon 760D with a Tamron 18-250mm zoom

Inspiration

I could see that all the essential elements had come together at the same time.. how could I not ?

Editing

Very little really, just adjusted the color temperature and pulled the black slider to get richer blacks and brought the highlights down a bit.

In my camera bag

I don't carry a bag, I usually go out with just the 18-250mm, I also have a Canon EF 50.18 which gives me an ~ 80mm on my APS-C body

Feedback

know the time of day when the birds come to the lake or river and be prepared if all the elements come together, for me it was easy, home was 5mins away and this pelican often sits there for sometime.
