Behind The Lens

Location

Hockley Valley, Ontario during autumn season when its fall colours are legendary

Time

I've been wanting to catch fall colours in the Hockley for years and finally had a free day to drive an hour or so there, spending the afternoon on a beautiful cool fall day driving through the entire region. I had close to a hundred captures and spent time processing them and chose a few that showed off the unique beauty of the area.

Lighting

Early afternoon lighting was perfect with clear skies. What was challenging was to capture the breadth of the landscape while having interest in the foreground and background, and avoiding blowing out details.

Equipment

Nikon D810 with 16-35mm lens, hand held, no flash

Inspiration

The perching raven really caught my attention and I thought would offer an intriguing focal point. It flew away and kept returning to this branch, as if calling me to focus on that framing.

Editing

In post processing, I wanted to create something unique, apart from traditional autumn scenes, while retaining the brilliant tones of the hillside seemingly on fire in colour. I spent time experimenting with different approaches and settled on silhouettes and a limited colour pallette to make the image bold and outstanding.

In my camera bag

I mostly do landscapes as well as floral macros, so my kit includes wide (16-35mm and 20mm) lenses, as well as 105mm and 70-200mm. I carry a tripod in the car, but prefer to go hand held as much as possible, even when I take multiple exposures for HDR.

Feedback

I am constantly searching for unique and personalized approaches to display the beauty of the world around us, so not all my experiments work out, and I need to trust my own intuition in doing my art. I hope that others will continue to experiment and hone their unique vision of how they experience life.
