Behind The Lens

Location

In a condo on the ski hill, this couple was married at the top of the mountain and then skied the day away together.

Time

I'm not entirely sure, I think it was late morning.

Lighting

Obviously lighting is what this photo is all about. I overexposed the highlights by about 2 stops, then added a fill flash with a Gary Fong dome. I also placed a soft white bounce below her to blow out the harsh under chin shadows.

Equipment

I really love my Nikon D750 for weddings, being able to shoot full frame without generating terabytes of data like the D8xx series is nice. I shoot weddings with a 70-200 and a 50 prime, I typically shoot this style of photo at ƒ2.8 or ƒ3.2 on the 50, this was a fast paced wedding and I somehow wound up at ƒ1.8. Due to the speed of weddings, I don't mess around with tripods or monopods. Most of what's in my bag is lighting related (triggers, flashes, batteries and diffusers). For the flash I use a collection of Nikon pro line flashes (SB-5000 and similar).

Inspiration

My very first wedding I did a very similar shot, but forgot to remove the clutter in the background. I've been chasing a very specific shot ever since, I'm still chasing it and it's been a fun challenge. Especially since I don't focus on weddings and only shoot a couple a year, it's a fun challenge for myself.

Editing

I have a very mild approach to processing these photos, part of the fun for me is capturing it all in camera. This is just with the simple sliders in lightroom.

In my camera bag

Depends on the shoot. Weddings? 70-200 on a D750, 50 prime in the bag and a handful of flashes. My assistant is typically on a D500 or D750 with a 24-70 carrying around bounces.

Feedback

Go play with it, figure out the fills with the shadows. Be ridiculous and tell awkward/dirty/fun jokes while shooting to get genuine reactions, if your camera has 3d AF or Eye AF, use it and capture that moment that your subject laughs.
