Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in a forest near my hometown.

Time

The photo was taken on May 19 in the morning. We've found this place a few days before, when there were still eggs there, so we were going there every day waiting for chicks to appear. Luckily for us, the nest was on an old stump with some bushes nearby, so we could hide in these bushes without disturbing the bird.

Lighting

The light was rather poor that day, besides that, it's always darker in the forest, so you won't see any great light here :)

Equipment

This photo was shot on a Canon 70D with Canon EF-S 55-250 lens. This lens is really great, especially when it comes to its price :)

Inspiration

The more you learn about the birds (and nature in common) the more interesting it is. You start to see such things you never thought about, you realize that there's a lot of birds, plants, and insects around us, which you never heard of... And when you start to see it yourself, you cannot help showing it to the others.

Editing

There's actually only some basic lens correction and color adjustment, which is done with Lightroom.

In my camera bag

My wife and I are interested in bird-watching and bird-photographing, and as you know, there's no "maximum focal length" when it comes to birds, it's always the more the better. So we take Sigma 150-600 with us every time. On the other hand, some interesting macro scene can be found almost always, that's why Sigma 105 macro has its own place in a bag in every trip. But then it comes – what if there will be some nice landscape view there? Adding 18-55 lens... For all of these photo-genres, a tripod is a must-have, let's take it with us too. So very often we end up with almost all our equipment packed. Yeah, rather heavy, but blaming ourselves for not-taking-this-lens-when-you-need-this-at-most is much worse for us :)

Feedback

When it comes to birds photographing, patience is the main word. Unless you're a special forces sniper it's very hard to move around without all nearby birds knowing about your presence, so you have to stay still for quite a long time, letting birds stop taking you into account. The good news is that there's a lot of birds around us, and they are all excellent models, so it's just a matter of time to come eventually in a right place in a right time.
