At my aunts lake house and I notice this little bird house she's had forever. The moss covering it and the trees behind it had me remembering the stories my Nana used to tell me about the fairies who lived in the birdhouses in my yard. I then went and told my younger cousins

I took this photo at my great aunt's lake house from the deck on the back porch, near Durant, Oklahoma.Time
It was late morning, nearly afternoon by the time we arrived at my great aunt's. After the car ride down me and my brother spent most the rest of the day wandering around the property and taking different photos. This particular photo was taken about eleven forty-five in the moring.Lighting
The daylight was minimal that day. It was cloudy and particularly foggy, the fog rising from the lake and spreading over the surrounding area. If I had been shooting at a downward angle it would have been much darker due to the fact that the clouds were incredibly thick.Equipment
I used my Cannon Rebel XT camera without a tripod. I used a 18mm-55mm lens on it and nothing else. I did balance my camera on the deck railing though.Inspiration
Looking at the birdhouse reminded me so much of my grandmother's old stories. So old, in fact, that it took her a while to remember them when I brought them up again. When we were younger, my grandma told me and my brother stories about fairies that lived in birdhouses to protect nature from harmful spirits. When I walked out on that deck and spotted the old bird house sitting there, I knew it was a photo I had to take. It probably took me twelve different angles to find the right one, but it was worth the time. It's one of my favorite photos of all time. It was also one of my first. I had received my camera on Christmas morning, and it was only the day after New Years when this photo was taken. Seeing this photo just makes me smile.Editing
All my photos are digital, and the only thing I usually do after uploading them to my computer is pull up the contrast a little to enhance the subject of my photos and make them easier to see, as well as clearing them up a bit if they are blurry. I'll add certain tints sometimes if it helps enhance the effect of the mood I wish for the photo to convey. For this photo I added a slight green tint to the photo and pulled up the shadow's brightness a bit, but not much else.In my camera bag
I always have my camera, my detachable flash, and three lenses. The lens I normally use is my 18-55mm, but for shots of buildings or landscapes I'll usually pull out wider ones. I also keep my charger and a spare battery, a few of my empty sim cards in a case as well as a cloth to wipe my lens clean if it's foggy, rainy or humid.Feedback
If you want a photo of a birdhouse you have to remember the story behind it that you want to convey, same with every other photo. Remember the shadows that are cast and the wires the birdhouse is hanging from, and try to avoid both of those, though sometimes it's unavoidable. Overall, it's your photo. Just be creative and you'll find the perfect shot.
