Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken in Albufeira Portugal. Walking around the narrow streets gave a juxtaposition of old and new , I saw this doorway I thought it was amazing and took the shot.

Time

I'm sure this was in the afternoon, we were staying in a nearby town and had to catch the bus back .The street by this time was in full shadow so exposure was easier than in strong sunlight. I was using my little compact nikon S9900 which I like for street photography.

Lighting

The best time would be early in the morning for golden hour . Also less people are active and less traffic. Afternoon is ok for good light but patience is needed with the increased foot and vehicle traffic .

Equipment

I was using my Nikon S9900 compact , I always take it for street photography as its discreet and versatile with a fabulous optical zoom

Inspiration

Walking around a seaside town especially on the continent is a mixture of old and new architecture which I love. There were lots of adobe type houses with a backdrop of modern hotel skyscrapers , it was a case of finding a composition that suited the moment.

Editing

Apart from in camera processing nothing else was done to the photo.

In my camera bag

Normally if I set out to do street photography then minimal is the go. Cleaning cloth, spare SD cards and spare batteries but if I'm taking my DSLR then I would have my new 18-104 zoom lens and my 55-200 zoom also. I also take my 35mm x 1.8 prime for those tricky lighting conditions and when I really would like fabulous bokeh. Again, cleaning equipment, spare batteries ,spare SD cards and also polarizing filters, 6 and 10 stop ND filters.

Feedback

Research areas when you travel so you can seek out older houses that may have potential for this type of photography. Ask hotel reception where there might be interesting and older architecture around.
