Behind The Lens

Location

this photo was taken at Emu Lake , Alta Laguna Park Ballajurra , Perth Western Australia .

Time

It was a Winters morning around 6am on my way to work, I cant even remember why I had my camera with me now. I had done a recce on the Lake one day and decided that it could provide with a good reflection with right conditions. Being a complete novice I didn't have or know about ND filters to smooth out the water so I had to work with the gear I had which included a rudimentary tripod and Nikon D5200. I really only had one lens then the 18-55 kit lens supplied with the camera.

Lighting

Here in Perth the sun rises over the Perth Hills directly east from my position. With the right conditions ,low cloud cover over the hills ,we can get some spectacular sunrises. Mostly these are fleeting but this morning the light seemed to glow for an hour.

Equipment

My camera was my trusty newly purchased Nikon D5200 with an 18-55 kit lens , not sure of the aperture as being a novice I probably had the camera set on program mode as I wasn't sure at that time the nature of aperture and shutter priority never mind manual mode! I was using a tripod because it was dark and didn't want any camera shake if the exposure became to slow.

Inspiration

Here in the west ,Sunsets are our speciality, but driving to work in an easterly direction every morning gave incredible sunrise vistas! I thought a lot about composition and how i could make time to get a photo (as I had to get to work) . On the way to work there is an estate called 'The Lakes' , sounding promising, I drove in to check it out and found Emu Lake...I had to wait for the perfect sunrise and make sure I had my tripod and camera with me , On this particular morning it all came together perfectly .

Editing

The only post processing on this photo is in camera.

In my camera bag

At that time I only had my camera , kit lens and cleaning cloth , all purchased second hand on Gumtree. Today in my bag are my same camera a Nikon D5200. 18-55 kit lens , 35mm 1.8 prime lens , 18-105 zoom, 55-200 zoom and if I need it a Nikon speedlight flash. I have a 6stop ND filter and a 10 stop ND filter and at least two circular polarizing filters. Two spare batteries ,two spare 32gb SD cards and cleaning implements.

Feedback

My advice firstly is to search for the ideal location for your composition and then check for Sunrise times and position in the sky that will be complimentary to your chosen composition. Get to your location at least 1/2 an hour before sunset and get set up . Choose a day where the weather is likely to give you the ideal results ie .. Scattered cloud cover, low wind conditions . Take an ND and or a graduated ND filter as you may want to smooth out your chosen lake/pond and expose for a high dynamic range especially Sunrise. Be prepared for slow exposures so a tripod is essential and spare batteries are a must as you wouldn't want your camera to die at the crucial moment.
