Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken while traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. The mill site is a popular restaurant, rest stop and photography location featured in parkway literature.

Time

The photo was taken at 11:59AM on 10-26-2016. I had stopped for lunch at the Mabry Mill restaurant and strolled the grounds afterward. Was leaving when another photographer shouted that the water had calmed and there was a great reflection shot. My main camera battery had died, so I grabbed my spare and started shooting.

Lighting

Nothing spectacular about the lighting other than it was a crisp Autumn day with nary a cloud to be seen.

Equipment

Since my DSLR battery had died, I grabbed my Canon PowerShot A85 and started shooting to catch the reflection in calm water. The camera was set on Auto. EXIF data shows f2.8, 1/800sec. with no ISO shown.

Inspiration

This is popular stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and recommended for photography year round. Being able to catch a reflection of the mill in the calm waters of the pond made the shot.

Editing

Cropped from original a little and enhanced colors. I use an old Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006 program which is very simple and quick. Still works, even in Windows 10.

In my camera bag

Sony DSLR A230 with Tamron 70-300 and 18-200 lenses plus a Canon PowerShot A85 carried in pocket. Have a generic tripod and monopod but rarely use them. Have UV filters for lenses.

Feedback

Be ready to grab a camera and start shooting. Even a point and shoot camera is better than missing a shot. With smart phones, etc., being so popular, those of us using regular cameras sometimes don't get the best vantage point. Keep trying.
