Beaufort, SC was one of the first National Cemeteries designated by Pres. Lincoln in April of 1863. This cemetery contains veterans of every conflict between the Civil War and Afghanistan. Union troops from Florida, S C, and Georgia were moved here to their final resting place. There are more than 7,500 Civil War soldiers interred here, including 4,019 unknown soldiers. Many both Federal and Southern soldiers fell on the battlefield. 6,500 veterans of the Spanish American war, WW I, WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, as well as peace time veterans have joined their comrades in final rest here. In May of 1987, 19 Union Soldiers of the all black Mass. 55th infantry were found on Folly Island, SC, and moved here in 1989.
It was a humbling experience to walk among the resting place of so many honorable men and women. Even though one group waged brother against brother, I thanked them "ALL", regardless of uniform for performing the duties they were ordered to follow.
Next time you see a man or woman in uniform please tell them thank you for what they do. Hold them up in your prayers, because above the line where they signed their name.......they willingly agreed to give their all, to include their life.
