Behind The Lens

Location

This scene is the rusting wreck of the Janie Seddon, resting here at high tide in Motueka, New Zealand

Time

This was taken at sunrise in winter, where I normally go for a morning walk along the seafront while visiting family here in the small South Island town.

Lighting

This was very early in my photographic calling, and like most landscape based photographers, I tend towards the early or late times of day to keep the dramatic light of any scene at maximum impact.

Equipment

This was taken on my very basic Canon 650D, with a light tripod and kit lens.

Inspiration

Something that has never changed for me, is a bloodymindedness to keep returning to a subject until I am totally satisfied with the results. The Janie Seddon here is a good example of this, where I photograph her every time I am in the area to see if I can achieve something new and different.

Editing

I have never been a prolific post processor of images, and while I now use Capture One as my editing program of choice, here I used Lightroom, with very light editing. I prefer the effort put in before and during the press of the shutter rather than time spent in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I have now moved to Fujifilm and have an XT3 with battery grip, 18-55; 55-230; and a 35mm f2 prime lens. A manfrotto tripod, ND filters, and polarising filters always travel with me.

There is only one way to really get better in this game... keep doing, keep reading, seeing, and experimenting. Learn all the basic rules of photography then go about seeing which ones you can use and which rules to break to get your own style going!
