Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken on a friends farm in central Victoria, about 20 minutes from Bendigo. The family farm has a handful of such jems just rusting away in various states of decay.

Time

It was a late, lazy summer afternoon around 6pm.

Lighting

The scene was failry shaded but the sun was about 20 degrees above the horizon which became a double edge sword; great lighting from some directions and total wash out at others.

Equipment

Hand held Canon 600D with a Samyang 14mm ultrawide lens. I was just starting to experiment with multiple exposure HDR at the time so it was a realtively simple 3 exposure, +/- 1 Av burst shot. I now use a Canon 6D with the same lens but 5 or even 7 shot exposure bursts.

Inspiration

I enjoy photographing man-made decay; cars, factories, buildings, etc... I think it stems from my professional engineering background of heavy industry and machinary.

Editing

I was just starting to experiment with multiple exposure HDR at the time so it was a realtively simple 3 exposure, +/- 1 Av burst shot. The shots were lens compensated in Lightroom then exported to Photomatix for HDR processing. I now use a Canon 6D with the same lens but 5 or even 7 shot exposure bursts.

In my camera bag

My deafault bag that goes everywhere with me includes; * Canon 6D * Canon 70~300mm Mk I * Canon 50mm prime * Canon 35~70mm Mk I * Samyang 14mm ultrawide * Gurilla mini-tripod * 58mm lens filter set with 9 filters

Feedback

Multiple exposure HDR shooting is a great way to capture details wihtin mixed lighting and produce wonderful decay effects. I receommend 5 or 7 exposure on burst setting so you do not need to carry a tripod in most cases.
