Behind The Lens

Location

The shot was taken in Maldon, Victoria, during a random photo capturing exploration drive through the district.

Time

It was around 3~4pm on a cool spring day.

Lighting

The natural dynamic range of the train in shadow and the background in full sun meant that I had to capture the shot using HDR bracketing.

Equipment

Canon 6D with a Samyang 14mm F2.8 lens. This was taken during a 'HDR phase' I went through, lots of experimenting, so the shot is constructed from a 5 bracket shot of -2, -1, 0, 1, 2.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the classic feel of a steam train as I imagine a 1920s classic black and white film; the steam rising over the cab, smoke billowing and a slightly mysterious feel.

Editing

Yep...most definitely. I used both Lightroom and Photomatix to get this shot just how I imagined it. As fate would have it, when I took this shot I posted a ~10min youtube clip on how I did it! Just pop over to the link to see the process &bt; https://youtu.be/uDsG_dUFTeQ

In my camera bag

I do a lot of motorsports photography so I chuck in to bodies, Canon 6D and 600D. Whilst the 600D acts as a backup, they do serve different functions with the cropped 600 giving me extra reach for day light events. Next is my workhorse lens for the track, 70-200 F4, and a pit lens, 24-105. If night racing is involved and I expect to get close to the track then a Canon 430EXII is thrown in for rear curtain sync shots of the cars in action.

Feedback

Find some old buildings, preferably abandoned or falling apart, and use them for HDR practice. To learn the techniques, use a tripod then progress to controlled breathing for longer handheld shots so you can capture HDR on the fly.
