Very creative. Mid-fall shots (which is how I assume this might have been taken, though I could be SO wrong) are very difficult to capture - excellent job!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my daughters bedroom, it was perfect for the theme of dreaming that I was going for and it was about her, so there was no other place like home.

Time

This was taken around 4pm, the light was fading and shadows were creeping in through the room. I felt like it was the perfect time to take advantage of the natural light, it was airy, mystical and magical.

Lighting

All natural light was used, I did plan for the time of day because it was the most interesting light for me. The darkness fallen signified a time to sleep and placing my daughter a certain way lit her beautifully. It created drama, shape and I don't think the image would have been as successful if the light was different.

Equipment

I used a canon 5d mark II and a 50mm F/1.8 canon lens.

Inspiration

I was actually browsing on Facebook and a page I previous liked popped into my timeline called Cotswold Characters, they create handmade items. Well, it was a necklace of a night sky and a girl falling threw stars, I had to buy the necklace right away, it was one of a kind. Then I planned my shoot and afterwards give the necklace and photo to my daughter which she loved. Both are one of a kind precious memories to have.

Editing

I did, I needed to create a composite to get the levitation. For this photo it took around 5/6 photos. My plate image for the background, an image of my daughter lying on a suitcase, another image of the hair and a few other images of the movement of the dress. Then I used masking layers in Photoshop to create this photograph. I did edit the photo with curves to add a little something more to the colour, I wanted the colour palette to be different from the original photo and create a painterly effect.

In my camera bag

I have my canon 5d mark II, 50mm F1.8, 85mm, 50mm macro and 24-105L. I do carry a lens baby incase I want to get creative. A flash gun is a must to create a difference to your portraits on location. Some crystals to add a little flare and a mirror. I will have at least 3 memory cards, dust cloth, wireless triggers and tripod mount. I'll bring my instax mini and go pro, you never know when you might need them.

Feedback

Always use a tripod so you can get the perspective correct, use a shutter release so that will minimalise the camera shake and take a plate image (which is a background image without the subject in the frame). Start of with something basic and once you get the hang of it, go for gold!
