Location
Kris Kros was taken at Boulder Beach Penguin Sanctuary, Simonstown, South Africa.Time
23 February 2013 at 4:58PM. February is the last month of the summer season in Cape Town. The sun sets around 20:30 in the evening so lighting at the time I took the photo was still good.Lighting
The reflection of the ocean and the white sand made the lighting a fair challenge. I normally am a point and shoot photographer as I don't have professional training. So I take as many photos as I possibly can that appeal to me, and then with a little editing with standard photo tools, I am able to get the photograph to look like something. I'm enjoying photography and would love to learn the technical aspects thereof.Equipment
Only a camera, a handheld point and shoot type camera, which sadly no longer is working. My wife and I went for a run on the beach one day, and we sadly got the camera wet. The sea water had penetrated everything. after letting it dry for a bit, we tried to see if the camera would work. Sadly, it didn't.Inspiration
The JackAss penguin or African Penguin is at risk of being endangered. I normally like a moment to appear before I take the shot, as opposed to just taking photographs. I like to make the shots count. Documenting and sharing the wonderful work that is done to preserve the well being of these penguins is always an inspiration for me. We as humans are on the verge of destroying our beautiful planet. Visiting sanctuaries such as Boulders penguin sanctuary, does invoke emotion, when you observe how these animals interact with each other.Editing
Post Processing is not an exact science for me. I use the standard photo editor that comes with a normal computer. So there's a bit of Auto-Enhancing and slight touches on contrast, brightness and colour. In my camera bag
I'm excited to say that I have upgraded to a Canon EOS 80D, DLSR with a 18-135mm lens, with a 50mm prime lens for more intimate shots. I'm hoping to purchase more purposeful lenses for Macro and Landscape.Feedback
The best advice, I can provide, is learn to use your camera and understand some technical aspects of composition and ligthing.
