Location
This photo was taken off the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. After a few days of driving the coast and photographing some of the amazing beaches Oahu has to offer, I ran into surfers along the coast just before sundown.Time
I cannot forget this image, even if I tried. Why? Because this was only my second flight with my DJI Mavic. After a long day driving up and down the coast of Oahu, visiting the dole plantation and getting up close and personal with sea turtles, the day couldn't of ended any better. As the sun was starting to set, my wife and I were looking for a nice place to watch the sunset and relax, (little did she know I had my drone packed in my F-Stop Bag :P) After finishing off our dinner on the cool night, I noticed 4-5 surfers running out to catch the last waves before the sun dipped below the horizon. What a great time to pull out the mavic and fly it over the pacific ocean and watch surfers from a different perspective. Extra: After shooting for around 30 mins, and my batterey about to die, I noticed a surfer had lost his board along a very rocky area of the beach. Before packing up I flew the drone over to see if I could locate it from above, with no luck I returned the drone. I will never forget the backstory to this image, as I was not using the drone just for photos but to help someone who needed help as well.Lighting
The light was pretty spot on during this photo, Often times you get a really bad sun spot on the water during high noon, so I highly suggest shooting when the sun is not so night in the sky and great side lighting.Equipment
My trusty DJI Mavic ProInspiration
It was pretty spontaneous. Nothing was really planned out and just happened at a good time. During the time of this photo you rarely saw photos from above, let alone of surfers in the habitat. I can tell you this, it will not be my last :D.Editing
Yes, I did a little bit of post to this photo using lightroom to bring out shadows and highligts, then I did a little contrast and spot sharpening in Nik Collections Color-Efex pro, then brought it back to Lightroom to add a deeper blue with gradient fliters, along the edges and a vignetteing that drew the eye to the surfer. In my camera bag
This differs from location but during my trip to Oahu. During this trip to Oahu, I packed my F-Stop bag to the zippers with: Canon 6D, Canon 17-40, Canon 24-70, DJI Mavic Pro, GoPro Hero 5, Selfies Sticks, Underwater floaty thingy, Gorilla Pod, Lee Filters, Chargers and Batteries, Batteries and more Batteries....Feedback
Absolutely, Arrive early to the beach, scout out a great landing location, if you have a towel or blanket lay that out so you don't have to worry about landing on an uneven surface. Waiting for the surfers to get out as far as they can is key before launching your drone and they wait a while to catch waves and you want to have as much batterey as you can so you can chase them down. Also a good idea is to get ahead of them early and find a comp before they go flying right out of your frame. Good luck!
