Location
This photo was taken somewhere in Glacier National Park. I can't pinpoint or remember exactly where because we were on an Amtrak train and I was shooting this (and several other photos) out the window of the train. If memory serves, however, we're in about the middle of the Park.Time
This would have been relatively early morning; around 8AM or so. We were on a train riding through Glacier national park, and we were starting to go through the park just as the sun was coming up. This would be once the sun was fully up on that day.Lighting
It's not really something I had a lot of control over. It's a landscape shot; I didn't even have control of when I was there, because I was on a moving train.Equipment
I use a Canon T5i; and I used a 50mm F1.8 lens (although it wasn't that wide open for this image. I also wouldn't have been able to get this view without being on the Amtrak Empire Builder train.Inspiration
I was traveling from Portland, Oregon, to New York City by train, before flying to London via Lisbon for a study abroad program in the spring of 2017. I knew that I was embarking on an amazing journey, so I was snapping away like crazy, and keeping the photos that I felt were better and more meaningful. This photo survived because it is one of the better, more compelling images.Editing
I did some basic color-and-lighting correction to bring out the detail, but I'm only interested in editing photos so that they better represent what I actually saw, not so thatIn my camera bag
I have a Canon T5i with three prime lenses: a 24 F2.8, and 50mm and 85mm F1.8 lenses. I carry either a shoulder rig or tripod strapped to the side of my bag (depending on what kind of work I'm expecting to be doing), a remote shutter release, spare battery, and RODE shotgun mic (for when I do video work), as well as three spare SD cards. All of my lenses have UV filters and CPL filters; I tend to shoot outdoors during daylight, and CPL filters really help bring out the colors of landscapes by getting rid of a lot of glare.Feedback
Get out of the city, and go. Just go somewhere that you can use a mid-to-narrow lens and still capture a wide vista. Living in a city can make it very hard to get out into nature, but it's important to give yourself a sense of space and distance.
