Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the baseball field during a storm. I wanted to experiment out of the box and the client was 100% in on it.

Time

This image was taken in the early evening during a rain and wind storm. We had to wait a lot of the storm out in the announcers box.

Lighting

This was the most muddiest , wettest session I have ever stuck it through. The client wanted something out of the ordinary for senior pictures. When the rain hit hard we had to quickly take the tarp to cover home plate so it wouldn’t become a giant puddle. In between the heavy rain we ran out, pulled the tarp off and shot as much as we could before it down poured again. This client was a trooper, the mom was an amazing assistant and I , well I pretty much laid in a muddy puddle for all these shots.

Equipment

With the storm going in and out, we didn’t have time to set up a ocf. We stuck it out with our canon 5dmark II canon 35mm and a yongnuo YN560 IV flash on camera.

Inspiration

The client wanted something out of the ordinary and extravagant for his senior pictures. He said he would do whatever it takes and I happened to have an energy drink just before the session. We decided to hit it out of the ball park and made sure we didn’t leave the field until we got exactly what we wanted

Editing

With these kind of images it takes a lot of post processing, this image has a total of 6 images set together. One for the field lights, one for the client, one for the ground, one for the ball, one for the dust flying and one for the shattering glass.

In my camera bag

I always have my 35 1.2mm lens. You can never go wrong with it. I’m not fully equipped to what I would like, but I have enough to get by. You don’t need it all to get the shot. Along with my 35 I have my 50mm, YN560 IV flash, gels, 5dmarkii, transmitters and receivers, extra memory cards, and batteries.

Feedback

Imagine what you’re wanting to achieve and need before you get to your session. In This particular image we had to make sure we had the baseball flying, the glass shattering , the client in the correct position, the lights on and at the right time of day. The ground dry and ready, dust blowing. In some cases you’ve an get the side lives at a different time, I prefer to get them all at the session to keep things more organized.
