I just wanted to leave a quick note to say thank you for participating in my "Portraits on Location" challenge. While I ultimately chose another photo as the winner, this one was one of my 100 favorites in a field that was just shy of 2000 entries.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Plas Power woods, Bersham, Wrexham, Wales, which is about 1 mile from my home.

Time

Just about the worst time of day imaginable with bright sunshine. It was about 1.30pm and the plan was to shoot Alice in a bluebell wood nearby but the light was such that we abandoned the bluebells and went to find some shade.

Lighting

The light was awful and the only option for this shot was to use backlight for it.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 7Dmk2 with a EF 24-70mm zoom lens all on a tripod. I needed the tripod to get a longer exposure to enhance the waterfall which meant Alice had to stay very still.

Inspiration

It was a pure accident as we went to take photos of a bluebell wood. The light was awful - bright sunshine at about 1.30pm. I have taken many photos of the waterfall in the past and as we were nearby decided to experiment and shoot a combination type of photo (portrait and long exposure waterfall landscape) I don't even know the correct term for this. I had a beautiful location and a pretty model so experimented.

Editing

I did use a little post processing and darkened some of the blown out areas. I also sharpened a little but not much else.

In my camera bag

I normally have two bodies - Canon 5Dmk2 and a 7Dmk2 along with a EF 24-70mm zoom lens, and sometimes a EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II USM zoom lens. I will also have a polarising filter and a variable ND filter together with a lens cleaning brush. I normally take a tripod along with spare batteries / SD cards and a cable release.

Feedback

If you want to capture a similar photo, wait for the light to be right and aim for the golden hour. You will need a ND filter to slow down the exposure (I use a Hoya variable density filter). As you need to show the waterfall with silky water you need to expose around 1 sec to 3 secs which means your model will need to keep very still for the shot. You will also need a tripod and cable release. Try experimenting with different shutter speeds to get the effect you want. You may also want to set the aperture to around f8 so the water is also in focus, again experiment with the settings until you get what you want.
