Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken as part of ad campaign for a regional bakery chain.

Time

This image was taken on April 20, 2017 at 10:30am. The baker has made a few dozen of these blueberry muffins for this shoot and we spent about half an hour looking for the "hero" muffin that would be used for the ad. One that had the best shape, and the right amount of coloring.

Lighting

The key to food photography is creating images that make the viewer want to reach into the page and pull out the item. We used a combination of natural light for the fill, and a Nikon Sb900 in a square soft box to create the direct lines of light and shadow.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3, and a Nikkor 24-85mm lens. This is my go to set up for most on sight food shots. Various reflectors, flags and diffusers used to shape the light and shadows. The Sb900 was mounted in a 20x20 inch Hedler MaxiSoft softbox.

Inspiration

This shot is a collaboration between the client, our food stylist, the pr firm and everyone at our studio. There is so much that goes into creating a food ad that begins weeks before the shot is actually taken.

Editing

There is very little post processing in this image. A little color balance and a push on the vibrance. Like most food photos, the preparation makes everything possible.

In my camera bag

For on location shoots, I carry my small gear set up consisting of two Nikon D3 bodies, two Nikkor 24-85mm, two Nikkor 50mm, and two Nikkor 100mm lenses. Pocket wizards, several square and strip soft boxes, a handful of C stands, plenty of diffusers, flags and reflectors. Lastly the laptop because every shoot is done tethered.

Feedback

The best advice I can give for anyone interested in food photography is to build the best team possible. Chefs and stylists have equal parts in the success of the image. With any type of photography ask yourself is you are taking a picture of the scene or about the scene. Once you learn to create images about the scene, everything will be better.
