Saw one of these yesterday near Bluff, UT. Don't get too close behind him. I love the way you isolated him from his surroundings.

Thank you! This was in the Mohave desert. Easy to isolate him, and he cooperated with me trying different angles. This was shot with my phone camera inverted so I could get the lens at ground level.

Behind The Lens

Location

Edwards Air Force Base, Mohave Desert, California, USA. I was there for work and staying in the on base lodging. Out back of the lodging is open desert and a nice walking / running path. I had my phone with me and saw this stink bug in the open desert just off the path. He seemed like a perfect subject for me to get creative with my phone camera.

Time

Sunset. I was taking a walk along the path after dinner to enjoy the absolutely beautiful desert evening.

Lighting

I wasn't thinking about the sunset lighting when I first started taking pictures of him. I just wanted to see if I could do an eye level shot with my phone. He just happened to be facing in the direction of sunset. Such a cooperative subject!

Equipment

Iphone 6 camera. Handheld. No flash. I inverted the phone so I could get the lens closer to the ground. I wanted an eye level shot.

Inspiration

I am new to photography and am always trying to find ways to take pictures from a different perspective. I thought an eye level shot would be fun. I took a few photos with the camera upright, but it was still a "look down" shot. So, I finally decided to invert the camera to see what happened. Who knew a stink bug would. be this much fun to photograph.

Editing

No post processing.

In my camera bag

Olympus EM1 with a variety of lenses, including wide angle, macro, zoom, and 25mm prime. Tripod. Underwater photography setup.

Feedback

When approaching a subject, think of ways you can take a picture from a perspective the audience hasn't seen before. That's more interesting than "just another shot."
