Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my bedroom, and he is on my carpeted floor. The background is my bedroom wall. This happened during the 2019 Las Vegas great grasshopper invasion. In some places, the grasshoppers were inches deep. He must have hitchhiked on my clothes, bags, or something else for him to arrive in the second floor bedroom of my house.

Time

Night time. N/A for this shot, since it was taken indoors. I was getting ready for bed when I discovered him on my nightstand.

Lighting

This was taken with ambient overhead tungsten light in my bedroom. There were was sufficient light that I could keep the ISO low, and the shutter speed was 1/60.

Equipment

I used an Olympus OMD EM1 with an Olympus 60mm macro lens. No flash. Ambient overhead tungsten light. I placed the camera on the floor, so there were no issues with camera movement / slow shutter speed.

Inspiration

Well, I would think the grasshopper invasion was a once in a lifetime experience. And for a grasshopper to be in my bedroom? For others, the priority would have been for the grasshopper to leave the bedroom, either dead or alive. Not me! My only thought was, "where is my camera?" I was fortunate to have a cooperative model. He tolerated me for about 10 minutes, and then I set him free after thanking him for his time. It wasn't until I was in the post-processing phase that I was able to really study his face. What a fascinating creature.

Editing

Lowered the highlights and bumped up the shadows. Slight bump in texture, clarity, and dehaze, and vibrance. Thankfully, I didn't feel the need for much.

In my camera bag

For macro, I have an Olympus OMD EM1 with an Olympus 60mm macro lens. For landscape and wildlife photography, I have recently started using the Sony A7III with the Tamron 17-28mm F2.8 Di III RXD (A046) Wide Angle Lens and the Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS (SEL200600G) Telephoto Lens. Tripod. Polarizing, graduated, and ND filters.

Feedback

You never know when an opportunity is going to present itself. Don't think. Grab your camera and shoot. Wildlife photography can be challenging, as not all subjects are camera ready. When you have a cooperative subject, take advantage of it. Take shots from multiple angles, and play around with aperture and shutter speed. Sometimes, the best shots are the ones you weren't expecting to be. Critters can experience stress. Be aware of this and don't spend too much time with them before you thank them and let them on their way.
