Behind The Lens

Location

Taken near to Corfe Castle, Dorset, England on the Swanage railway.

Time

Steam trains run several times a day on the Swanage Railway, a railway line running between Wareham and Swanage in Dorset, England. This particular steam train was passing by as I sat enjoying a picnic lunch alongside the track, so I had to get up and take a few shots as it steamed by.

Lighting

Taken in the middle of the day using natural light.

Equipment

My Camera of choice (and always to hand) is the Canon EOS 7D MkII, on this occasion coupled with the Sigma 18-300mm lens I use as a walk-around lens. Hand-held.

Inspiration

Vintage trains steaming through the beautiful English Countryside are such a wonderful sight, how could you not be inspired to take photos like this?

Editing

I always shoot in RAW. This was no exception. After importing into Adobe photoshop and adjusting colour, contrast and sharpness, this particular shot was run through NIK filter's HDR Efex Pro.

In my camera bag

Always the 7D MkII. I might also have a spare camera body, either the original 7D or a 40D and a selection of lenses.

Feedback

There are many, many, heritage railways like the Swanage Railway throughout Britain, so wherever you are, there should be one within easy travelling distance. Use your favourite internet search engine to look for one, check the timetable for the train times and then head on over with your camera. Also look out for special days aimed just at photographers at many of the railways.
