I visited the Pointe aux Barques lighthouse, and when I took this photo, I wasn't sure what I was photographing. After trying to find out on the internet and still being unsure, I decided to write to the President of the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse Society, and ask. To my delight he promptly responded to my inquiry. This was part of his reply:
"what you have a photograph of is the old pier head for the lighthouse. The waters around Pointe aux Barques are very shallow, reaching out a mile and a half to two miles. There was not enough water for the supply ships to off load the needed supplies to keep the station going. If you climb the tower on one of the times it is open you can see the imprint of the arms that were constructed. The dock was large enough for the 7 to 29 foot “Huron Boats” to tie off to. The supplies were off loaded from the larger boat to the smaller Huron work boats, ferried to the dock and carried to the Lighthouse."
