Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the streets of small village named Achrol, situated in the outskirts of city of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.

Time

I remember getting out their just when my classes for the day got finished a bit early then usual. And by the time I reached there it was 5 o'clock in the evening. While roaming around the entire village, I came across this man almost half an hour after starting it.

Lighting

The walsl of houses of the village were mostly white in color. So, when the light from sun fell on the walls and reflected back that were a form of a bit diffused light along with the ambient light of the sun.

Equipment

The camera was Nikon D5300 and I use it's kit lens 18-140 @105mm. Just because it was a planned street shoot, so I took nothing else with me for equipment.

Inspiration

Rajasthan is one of the richest in terms of it's culture and villages and it's villagers. Finding such shots was the aim as I was working on the project for my dissertation of college. The kind of thing he is using is called "chilam" in Hindi which is usually used to smoke different kind of tobacco or weed. It's very rare to find these days. But what attracted me the most was the relationship of wrinkles and chilam. The use of old traditional equipment by an old man with the wrinkles described his experience and relation with those old things.

Editing

Yes, I went for a bit less saturated look as it would emphasize the old time and I boosted the wrinkles by dodging and burning wherever needed.

In my camera bag

These days, I normally bear Nikon Z6 and Nikkor Z 35mm 1.8 S and Nikon 50mm 1.8G lenses. These are my most reliable lenses that usually get me at par with any situation.

Feedback

The most important advice to make your subject comfortable by having a small chat with them. Their concern matters a lot, otherwise you may get yourself into trouble. Also, if you're on a planned shoot of such things, do some research about the place where you're going to, about it's people, their culture, important things to capture.
